Congress Expresses Airline Merger Concerns

After intense lobbying efforts by the Machinists Union, 47 Members of Congress wrote to the U.S. Attorney General and Secretary of Transportation questioning if airline consolidation is good for America.

Illinois Congressman Daniel Lipinski (D) and Ohio Congressman Steven LaTourette (R) led the campaign within Congress to gain co-signers for the letter. The complete letter and list of co-signers is available here.

“Airline executives who are seeking mergers threaten more than just their own employees,” said General Vice President Robert Roach, Jr. “A merger between two major airlines will have a ripple effect prompting other mergers. Smaller carriers like Air Tran, JetBlue and Southwest are rumored to be willing to jump into the merger pool. Additionally, thousands of workers at vendors who support the airlines can also lose jobs when hubs close and capacity is reduced.

Delta pilots reject arbitration over seniority list

Pilots for Delta Air Lines rejected the idea of submitting the integration of seniority lists to arbitration. The Northwest Airlines pilots union had suggested that arbitration could help the two sides overcome an impasse over seniority, which could move the two airlines closer to a possible merger. A letter earlier this week from the head of the Delta union suggested that the two pilot groups were no longer negotiating. Delta has strong stand-alone plan, CFO says
Delta Air Lines has a strong stand-alone plan and is not rushing to merge with Northwest Airlines, Delta Chief Financial Officer Ed Bastian said. "We don't feel pushed or hurried into any decision," Bastian said. "If we find the right deal, we'll pursue it." Pilot seniority issues have stalled merger talks between Delta and Northwest, and some industry analysts have said consolidation is on hold for now. Meanwhile, the airline has disbanded a group of outside advisers hired to guide a merger, according to media reports. Reuters
